Seriously, it's almost doubled in the last couple years, and there is more to come this spring 2012.

This past week, in my capacity as a Minneapolis Bike Walk Ambassador, I helped plan and execute four bicycle facility grand openings in five days. Prior to that it was two weeks with one event each week. My head is spinning. I'm so happy to have all of the event planning wrapped up, and so thankful for all of the support of partnering organizations and bicycle enthusiasts. Whew.

Here is one of the key websites attached to many of these grand openings: Bike.Walk.Move.

What a whirlwind and seriously, it's October in Minnesota and we were gifted 80-degree weather the past week and barely a drop of rain.

Now we enjoy it while it's last, then I shall hibernate once again until the spring. Though, I hope to pedal myself a bit further into the cold weather this year than years past. Bring it.

What will my next endeavor look like?

I was thinking that over the winter it might be fun to go out and purchase a t-shirt from every single Minneapolis Bicycle Shop. That would be quite the collection. What would I even do with that many t-shirts? I certainly couldn't find enough time to wear them all.

For now I'll just stick with my local fave, Behind Bars Bicycle Shop.

Habitat for Humanity + Bicycles = Awesome.

Since I was a small child I have been interested in home building. Later came architecture, skyscrapers, city planning, and so on. I love watching anything go from bits and pieces to a fully functioning something. Legos were my favorite toy ever, so much to create, limited only by your imagination.

This later, when I was in college, led to a fascination with the idea of Habitat for Humanity, but I have never taken the time to figure out how/when to volunteer: until now.

This week the Jimmy & Rosalyn Carter project for Habitat for Humanity is focusing on rehab'ing and building in a North Minneapolis neighborhood. Local non-profit TLC (Transit for Livable Communities) put out a call for people with bicycles and trailers to form a pedal powered delivery team to deliver tools and supplies to the various sites around the neighborhood. You BET I signed up!

On Wednesday I will finally have my chance to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, all the better, it's practically in my back yard and I get to participate while on my bicycle. Not to mention this will be the FIRST thing for which I bust out the Burley Honey Bee trailer that was gifted to us at one of our many baby showers prior to Baby Dubs arrival. (Baby Dubs will get his first ride in it next spring!)

Excited does not even begin to describe my emotion over all of this.

hdb,

Mackenzie

Nice Ride

(Photo: Courtesy of NiceRidemn.org)

I finally did it.

I finally went for my first post-prego bike ride, and it was on a Nice Ride bicycle.

Here in Minneapolis, during my maternity leave, a new bicycle share system was launched. So far as I can tell, it is amazing.

* Nice Ride *

The bicycles are comfortable, the seats are big and easily adjusted up and down, the frames are step through, making them more functional for more people, they have three speeds, a bell, integrated headlights, and a nice basket/bungee set up on the front for carrying purses, briefcases, shopping bags, what have you. Oh yes, they also have skirt/coat guards (!).

My ride from a meeting in Downtown Minneapolis to my office at the University of Minnesota really was a nice ride. I was stopped in the left turn lane awaiting the light change, and a man in a car next to me asked how I like it. Seriously, if these bright green, can't miss 'em, bicycles just might be our answer to world peace. OK, maybe not, but everyone sure is interested in them!

Now, I have only one request for improvement: a conscious effort to educate Nice Ride users on the unlawfulness of sidewalk riding. Tall order.

I can't wait for this thing to expand! The first 30 minutes are free (for annual members). It is a way to keep the bicycles in circulation, because most people will try to make short trips, within the 30 minute window, rather than hogging the same bicycle for hours on end.

Can you tell how I feel about all of this? I'm totally sold. It will be interesting to see how things go on campus once all of the students return for fall semester. Good thing those clever Nice Ride folks went with bicycles that are sturdy, easy to use, but also difficult to rip off, and OBVIOUSLY not anyone's personal bicycle.

hdb,
Mackenzie

Back in Black

"Well, I'm back, Yes I'm back
Well, I'm back, Yes I'm back
Well, I'm back, back
Well I'm back in black
Yes I'm back in black"

Quick Update:

Baby WKTB arrived on Friday, May 21st at 12:54 am. He was only 54 minutes late for his due date! Not too shabby. Only took some labor induction acupuncture, 21 hours of un-medicated labor, and a grand finale of a c-section for him to make his great escape. Now, seven weeks later everyone is happy, healthy, and doing just swimmingly! Did I mention he arrived at a whopping 11 lbs. 11 oz and 22.5 inches long? Yeah. I tested negative for gestational diabetes, so I'm not sure what happened there, but priority number one of "Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby" was achieved immediately, and for that we are grateful!

WKTB, in the flesh. Back in black, because that is my go to wardrobe color until I achieve my pre-pregnancy figure and weight, and even then I have quite a journey to achieve my goal weight. WKTB is another big, and very important reason to work towards becoming a healthier me! I hope to reach my goal weight by riding my bike. Enough so that St. Patrick's Day, over the past few years at least, has been the first day that I pull the bike out of winter hibernation. Even if I KNOW for sure that we will get snow once more before spring truly arrives. Not jaded, just realistic, I know my home. :)

Given that I'm 30 weeks along on baking the pierogi in this oven, I'm hesitant. I'm hesitant, but not because I think that pregnant ladies should not bike.

Instead, I'm hesitant because I am clumsy. I frequently fall down, for no good reason. The clumsiest person I know, and since the hormones started working double time, my clumsiness has increased exponentially.

I'm torn. I love my bike and I miss it. Beyond that, I am going through some serious bicycle riding withdrawal especially with today and yesterday turning out to be 60+ degrees and sunny.

So, I guess I will just pull the bike up, give it a once over, fill the tires, and stare at it for a while before I decide to ride or not.

Decisions, decisions...

hdb,
M

Good Stuff from City of Lakes Urbanism

My friend "Jacobean" over at City of Lakes Urbanism, wrote this great post on Minneapolis' upcoming bicycle boulevards. I've lived here long enough to not get my hopes up for a snow free March/April. That said, I find that St. Patrick's Day is often the first day I pull my bicycle out of the garage for my first ride of the year.

Our fine friends on the East Coast have certainly gotten the worst of this winter's weather. In Minnesota we have seen the greatest snowfall since I was a kid, and I have to admit, I kind of love it. (Disclaimer: even with all we've gotten, we certainly haven't had to deal with the mess that's shut down the East, and for that I am thankful.)

I myself am not a winter cyclist, though I am a winter walker! When the winter snowstorms hit, walking is often the more convenient way for me to get around. I love plodding through the neighborhood after a fresh snowfall. Provided that people actually clear their sidewalks (AHEM, it is an enforceable city ordinance in the lovely Minneapolis).

I'm no stranger to falling ass over tea kettle a few times during the winter, but this time around, I have had to be much more careful. Especially since as of yesterday I'm sitting here 26 weeks pregnant. While I usually slip and fall in slow motion, I would rather not hurt myself or the pierogi growing within. Actually, it's not even the falling I'm so much worried about at this point as I am not being able to get up again on my own. *visualizing Bambi learning to walk*

After hearing about slip sliding around a friend of mine suggested "Yaktrax." I adore them! They're like snow chains for my feet! Certainly not fashionable, as I'm not into "overgearing" myself, but man alive have these puppies saved me from a fall multiple times already this winter. However, they do fit on a variety of my shoes: snowboots, tall black boots, even my Dansko mary janes.

Moving on from pedestrian crashes and onto bicycle.

A surprisingly large number of people cycle through the entire winter here. I'm impressed and admire each and every one of them. I have been told by many that you just expect to bite it about once per season. My boss bikes approximately 350 days/year and he's since gotten his annual fall out of the way.

Crashes with other people, bikes, and vehicles are another thing. An acquaintance's friend had a collision with a car the other day, breaking his collar bone, and his leg. My first question was," is he OK?!" My second question is always, "Did they report it?" By report I don't mean taking legal action, unless it is warranted, but I urge ANYONE who EVER gets into a crash with anyone for any reason to report it. Reporting these incidents is important, as the data collected can help inform improvements to the built environment or outreach efforts that are either geographically focused or widespread.

I'll hop off my soapbox now, and waddle off on my merry way.

hdb,

Mackenzie & pierogi-in-the-oven

Chicago!

It's been far too long since I've visited Chicago, but here I sit! Arrived early this morning, took the train from O'Hare into the middle of the City, and here I sit near my hotel trying to get motivated to do homework. Graduate school is for the birds. Seriously. Who wants to be researching Housing Segregation and Public Health implications when I have Millennium Park and the Chicago Cycle Center (I refuse to call it the "McDonald's" Cycle Center) a stone's throw away?? UGH!

Perhaps I just solved the issue of motivation. As soon as I get some of these articles knocked out of the way, I'll wander over to the Cycle Center and see what I can find. I'll definitely have to snap some pictures, and be sure to pick up some information. Maybe they have implemented some programs that could be implemented at the University Bike Center? What an excellent adventure. We'll see if I actually have time to rent a bicycle and go for a little cruise.

If anyone out there in the blogosphere has some good recommendations for some fantastic, yet affordable restaurants accessible from Monroe and Wabash, don't hold out! :) Thanks!

hdb,

Mackenzie

Cyclopath & Breezer Birthday Bike

Every time I discover something new in the world of bicycling, especially things created/invented/manufactured in the Twin Cities, I feel lucky to live in Minneapolis, and want to tell everyone I know. I share my discoveries with others, whether it's new to everyone, or just new to me.

Due to my current place of employment I have been aware of Cyclopath for quite some time, but hadn't been mentioning it to others, because I hadn't yet used it enough to fully understand its capabilities, until this summer. The site is constantly being edited and improved by its users, and the front page got a snazzy make-over, which had led me to start spreading the word far and wide. I love it, and it has helped my take even more trips by bicycle that I would have waffled on before.

This site is everything wonderful in bicycle route-planning for which I had been longing. Those of us in the seven county Twin Cities Metro now have our very own route planning, way finding, point A to B direction giving tool, distance tracking tool, and it even plans the routes according to riding preferences and comfort. I absolutely love it.

Check it out here at: http://cyclopath.org/

Another reason that I have been biking more than ever (save for still being on my never-ending weight-loss mission)...My partner Jon bought me a brand spanking new bicycle for my 27th birthday! Really.

Sixteen of us took to the streets of downtown Minneapolis for "Minneapolis Bike Guy"s 32nd birthday. It was some hard work to keep the Pedal Pub rolling, but we were determined, and the beer aboard served as our fuel. The pub carries 17, including driver. 10 passengers pedal, while 5 others relax on the seats over the rear wheels, or the bench at the back of pub, while one more tends bar in the center of the vehicle.

The birthday boy opted for the Downtown Minneapolis route. Little did many of us know that it was the same night as the Minneapolis Aquatennial Torchlight Parade! The parade goers had already set up camp along Hennepin Avenue by 6 pm, when our tour started. It was hilarious to be pedaling this big beast of cycling fun as the crowds waved and yelled in happy exclamation. Not even the most surly of evening commuters, or out-of-towners braving the traffic to get a front row seat for the parade, could help but smile and wave as they passed us during the tail-end of the evening rush hour. There's something about 16 people on a pedal-powered version of a pub-table/bar, complete with beer/wine in hand, that can make anyone stop, smile, and enjoy the moment.

My mom was jealous that I had the chance to experience the Pedal Pub, so I promised her that we would do our best to rent it for her birthday, she'll be 49 this fall. She also reminded me that the Pedal Pub is equipped and tap ready to handle a 16 gallon keg of your favorite beer. Looks like I'll be ordering up a keg of Summit this fall.

Pedal Pub Twin Cities

Here's some photo-documentation of the event itself, courtesy of the Birthday Boy. It's a salvaged fake Schwinn looking saddle that I bought from the depths of the One on One bike junkyard. It was awesome for about a minute.

Almost immediately one of the springs came un-sprung from the frame, and now the rough metal edges of the frame are poking through the saddle's exterior right into my bum. It carries my weight unevenly due to screwy springs, and is causing other issues. I only paid about $3.75 for it, so it's far outlasted my expectations! Perhaps it will become a wall decoration in our new home's "Bicycle Bay"? (Otherwise known as a carport to two+ car households.)

Anyone have any good brand/model suggestions, save for Brooks? I would love a Brooks saddle, but not sure that's in the financial forecast at the moment...

Cheers!

Holy Cow!

It's been a long time since I've posted. Things got a little crazy around here.

The rundown:
- Tried to buy a house, closing fell through
- Still had to move out of apartment
- Nomadic Northeasters, stayed w/ friends while homeless
- Baked "Recession Hotdish" for Art-A-Whirl
- Studied for and completed three final exams
- Completed first year of grad school
- Worked on and participated in Bike Walk Week
- Tried to buy same house once more, SUCCESS!
- Moved into new house
- A lot of cleaning, unpacking, and fix-its around the house
- Started full time work for the summer
- Celebrated Jon's birthday

Whew. It's been a whirlwind couple of months.

I've been tooling around on my bike. My commute from the new house to the University is just over 5 miles. I've been testing different routes. I noticed a constant seam/expanding crack along the whole length of 2nd St NE the street all the way from the farthest reaches of NE to SE. I decided to look up the old streetcar maps. Yep, just as I suspected, the glint of steel I saw in the crack at one point was a buried rail. Perhaps 2nd street should be given back to the streetcars, because the rails they paved over so long ago just seem to keep on slurping up the asphalt anyway!

Still keeping an eye out for my next fully outfitted commuter bike. Liking the Masi "SoulVille 7", the Kona "Smoke", and Breezer "Uptown 8". And most importantly? They're cute as all get out!

Here's my personal favorite, but there are 7 designs to choose from.

Queen Bee Bike Panniers

Enjoy!

Talkin' bout the weather

I can't avoid it. I'm a Minnesotan, born and raised, and we can't help but talk about our crazy weather. As though after 15, 26, 35, or 78 years a swing of 40 degrees over 24 hours is something shocking. Those darn Alberta Clippers. One day a frigid -20F, the next 20F. Whew, now that that's out of my system...

This week was a new start for many reasons. New semester and new president being the two topping my list. I enjoyed it. If I remember correctly, I believe that January 21st was scientifically found to be the most depressing day of the year. It's grey, dreary, wintry, cold, the holidays are far gone enough that the mundane routine has likely returned, and many folks are lacking Vitamin D.

I CANNOT WAIT TO GET BACK ON MY BIKE!

I'm hoping that getting back to the grind will keep me preoccupied enough to power through to spring. The planning for Bike/Walk 2009 has commenced and that certainly helps for a speedy countdown to spring. Here's hoping finals don't interfere with the festivities and fun of what's sure to be the biggest event in Twin Cities Bike/Walk history. The state of the economy is going to make this the year for creativity and resourcefulness.

Speaking of the crappy economy. This recession has caused our doorstep to have been directly shat upon, like so many others. I won't go into too many details, thankfully we haven't yet "lost" a job, but the ever increasing number of jobs cut down in wages/hours/benefits has now hit home.

To pay homage to the tough times I brought some good old fashioned, truly Minnesotan "Recession Dip" to the inauguration potluck we attended on Tuesday. I leave you with the recipe.

Recession Dip:

1 can - Spam or Spam LITE, shredded

1 can - Hormel Chili with Beans or Hormel 99% Fat Free Vegetarian Chili
2 cups - Cheddar Cheese, shredded

1. Microwave on high for 5 minutes, remove lid, stir, replace lid and microwave 5 more minutes
5. Enjoy.

Serve with your favorite snack cracker. The cheaper the better.

*Warning* If you have any issues with taking in too much sodium. Don't come within 5 feet of this dish.

27 - 54 = 2009

With an equation like that I should have failed my statistics course this past semester, right? Not exactly. That equation isn't really mathematical at all. Instead it will serve as a reminder that I'm turning 27 and will do my damnedest to lose 54 lbs in 2009.

This fall was my first semester back to school in four years. My partner, Jon, and myself had some new household changes and challenges to tackle above and beyond the added adjustment of navigating full-time, nay, double-time grad school and a half-time job. He's been beyond supportive and understanding in every way imaginable, and I am more thankful that words can express to have him by my side constantly encouraging me and helping me down from the ledge when I'm a ginormous ball of stress. He is my rock. The end of 2008 allowed things wind down a bit, everything at this moment is more or less under control, and even thriving, for which I am also very thankful.

The calm of winter break has allowed me to reflect not only on aspects of my life that I can improve upon this upcoming semester and in 2009, but also brought to light the things that I let fall off by the wayside for the worse.

I'm chubby. Chubbier than ever before. When did this happen? I've lost lbs and been healthy weights, I've gained and been overweight. Well, I've always, in my mind, been a girl built with what we'll call a "more to love" physique. Overweight, not obese, but somewhat lucky for me curvy and fairly proportionate, even in my weight gain. The bubble butt is in the genes from ALL sides. I kid you not, even the youngest, thinnest, fittest, and athletic of my family members carry this back-side. Over the course of 26 years I have learned to embrace it. No matter how much I have ever gained or lost, it's always there to remind me to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Thank you, Noble/Morrison/Turner/Stensrud bubble butt, for teaching me such an important life lesson. Maybe I'll start referring to it as my "MacPack" an homage to Kirby Puckett and his "PuckPack"? Or not...

To what do I owe this latest case of "chubby"? I blame grad school, and my complete inability to manage school, work, home, and what my body needed. I think I have the tools I need now to improve that situation.

Things I will make time for in 2009:

1. I will ride my bike to school at least 3 times/week (once spring arrives).
2. I will consciously seek out at least 30 minutes of exercise five days a week.
3. I will eat healthfully and once again faithfully follow my Weight Watchers plan.
4. I will lose 20% of my weight over the course of 2009. I've got 51 weeks.
5. We will buy a house in lovely Nordeast and add to our family.
6. I will try a new sport: Looks like it's going to be broomball, wish me luck.
7. I will go cross country skiing at least 3 times before the snow goes away.
8. I will try a new recipe twice a month.
9. I will diligently use my Blue Sky Guide.
10. I will make a conscious effort to see my closest friends, more often.
11. I will give Jon a straight answer on when we can start trying for babies.*

* Disclaimer: My getting pregnant requires that we purchase a cargo trike for me to carry my sure to be big, poorly balancing, pregnant self, and thereafter: our children and groceries.

This one will do: TrioBike

Two Too Dapper Two-Wheelers

Jenny and Joel,

My apologies that it has taken this many months to post this lovely picture. I turned, knee popped out of joint, back into joint, lost balance, hit the floor spread-eagle on my back, in my fancy red bridesmaid's dress no less. Classy as always...

This is day three of 70 + degrees. It's November 5th. Not sure what's going on, but I'll take it! Unless of course this is a result of global warming...which is one of the things I'm trying to improve by bicycling...hrmmm.

All of that behind me, my knee has mended to 95% and all is well. We'll see if I can managed to emerge unscathed from wedding and wedding party number two in the coming weeks.

I don't think I mentioned that I purchased an additional bicycle? It is a 1970's Schwinn Continental, with a "Root beer" paint job. I was so excited to have friction shifting for the hills along my commute. I still love and ride my three speed Raleigh Coasting, but the auto-shifting and three speeds wasn't doing my knees any favors.

I also purchased a little knogg frog headlight in pink. I adore it, and it well matches my Starbright model Nutcase helmet.

Don't have any photos of the bicycle as of yet, but will try to get some posted soon.

MileMeter

Saw this on another blog, but can't recall which one. I failed to put it up earlier, but am very excited that it is fast approaching! I have been spreading the word to folks at work, and in other circles, but hopefully putting it up here will help the cause too!

Unite Bike 2008

REALLY cool concept! I have about three conflicting commitments that day, but still hoping I can squeeze it in.

If you are from the Minneapolis/ St. Paul area or just happen to know some lovely bicycling types that are here, please spread the word! Not too shabby considering Gustav stalled the festivities some, and the weather wasn't superb for promoting bicycling to folks who may not typically be interested otherwise.

Weather is no excuse for the native Minnesotans, but we'll let it slide for the many others who aren't acclimated to our weather patterns. Here in Minnesota we're a hearty stock. One of the local bicycle shop owners said it best, "There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing." So true. I can't wait until we have a permanent bike share program up and running!

I also have it on good authority that Denver's mileage blew ours out of the water. But in the end, it's just really exciting that so many people hopped on and took advantage! Well done Denver!

And since I have nothing else nice to say about the RNC, I will say nothing at all. All I ask is that you educate yourself on all sides of the issues, register, and vote. I just began my graduate program at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, and I believe it was Dean J. Brian Atwood who said something to the effect of "Respect the beliefs and opinions of others, you will learn the most from those you don't agree with."

I leave you with this advertisement that was posted over at Copenhagenize.com.

Ch' Ch' Ch' CHANGES!

It's been a month, and I still have yet to post a photo of my bicycle. It's been a month of running around, and the inability to multi-task and get my crap together! However, the design abstract, and materials list for my skirt guard are firmly in place, and I'm just waiting on the next pay check at this point! I'm really excited about the material, and fun pattern of that material I plan to use for the skirt guard. I think it will prove quite durable, water resistant, and easy to clean. I will certainly document the process along the way, and can't wait!

I moved again and couldn't find my camera prior to the move, and since have found it impossible to even begin to know where to look. Ridiculous, I know. The chain is cleanly oiled, and everything just peachy. Though I forgot to request a new nut to keep my chain guard in place. The dumb nut fell off sometime earlier this season, so now the chain guard occasionally slips and grates against the chain as I ride...not awesome. Oops.

I'm a pretty resourceful/handy person, so I'll be able to figure it out, but still stupid that I forgot to say anything to the people who were going to be taking my bike apart anyway...live and learn. :)

My newest obsession is finding a bicycling helmet that doesn't look so geeky. I ride slow. I don't need a super-vented, aerodynamic helmet. I hope to be able to track down a pink one, or maybe with a fun graphic at a local shop, but meanwhile I've been drooling over the Bern helmets on the London Cycle Chic page...so pretty.

I also recently, yet finally, stumbled across an entire community of people out there in the world whom I find it easy to relate. Copenhagenize, Copenhagen Cycle Chic, London Cycle Chic and all related cultural offshoots are my newest interest. It feels as though I finally belong somewhere, there IS a place for me in the bicycle culture! I'm not a misfit! Bajillions of people out there just like me, and FAR more chic than I'll ever be, but all part of the "Slow Bike Revolution", as it were. As previously mentioned, I'm doing a lot of walking/transit hopping these days, as opposed to the bicycling. I'm not the most graceful, coordinated person ever, which is why I've shyed away from the biking on ice thing. Though, I've come to find that, at times, walking in a cold northern city is nearly as treacherous as bicycling.

I really wish people would remove the snow from their sidewalks. Through the snow, rain, thaw, rain, snow, cycles that we experience in Minnesota, if you don't clear your sidewalk when you have the chance, it turns into a lumpy bumpy stretch of thick, mean ice. Now I enjoy ice skating as much as the next girl, but trying to "skate" uphill on a rough, bumpy path of ice in my boots, as I'm trying to make it in time to catch my bus, isn't my idea of fun. Particularily being as clumsy as I am.

I've fallen down twice, on the same stretch of ice. I look at the houses and wonder who lives in them. Are they elderly folks who could use a hand clearing their front walks? Are they homes that aren't occupied at all during the winter months? What's the deal? Are they just lazy? Are they pure evil, sick and twisted, watching me try my damndest to not go airborn ass over tea kettle onto the soft, plush, CEMENT-like "snow" bank?

No matter, if you are able bodied enough to shovel your own walk, or if you've got a fancy-pants snowblower, thank you for clearing your sidewalk. Perhaps if you're out clearing your walk and it's not colder that a well digger's butt in a klondike, you could use that snowblower to clear the rest of the walks on the block? Hell, give me a snowblower! I'll push that sucker up and down the entire length of 29th! OR, in the event that you are unable to clear your walk, but are reading my blog (?) call the City of Minneapolis at 311 and let them know you need some assistance. They have people/programs in place to help.

PSA: Get out to your precint caucuses on Tuesday, February 5th, 2008! I'm supposed to be writing about my bicycling adventures. It's damn cold out. Therefore, the bicycling adventures have been on hold. The cold is tricky, but the snow and ice are more difficult to navigate, when you have one bike, and it's not outfitted for such weather. I wish I were more well equipped for year round biking, but don't exactly have the income to make those investments at the moment. Someday...someday...

I commend those who have the cajones, will, and determination to take on the cold snowy Minnesota winter on two wheels. For now, I will stick to the bus and walking, and patiently wait for spring to arrive.

Speaking of spring, I may not be biking at the moment, but I am getting ready for my triumphant return. My gift from my employer this holiday season was a $50 gift certificate to Behind Bars. My local and most favoritest bicycle shop in Northeast. I stopped in a couple weekends ago and picked up my Planet Bike Freddy Fenders! Ooh. Ah. I haven't put them on yet, but I figure I have plenty of time.

Not sure what I will buy with my remaining balance. I'm thinking perhaps a pannier of some sort, or maybe another collapsible basket? We shall see what tickles my fancy. In other good news, an acquaintance suggested a potential solution for getting my bike on the bus. Apparently if I flip the front wheel/handlebars 180 degrees, so facing backwards, it should shorten the wheel base just enough that it will fit into the rack. I have yet to try this, but I'm crossing my fingers! If anyone reads this (fat chance) and happens to have a cruiser style bike and tries this trick, let me know how it goes!

Bicycle, Bicycle, BICYCLE!

"I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my bike. I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride it where I like." - Freddie Mercury

Is this week passing slowly or what? Uff-da. All of the grey and dreary weather definitely isn't making the time pass quickly.

Last week, however, was a great week for riding around! I'm now able to haul more junk (groceries, work things, etc) on my bike now too! Last week I decided I really needed to figure out a way to put my work bag on my bike, rather than having it strapped to my back, because it just isn't comfortable. That, and being female it looks weird to have a bag strap smashed between the girls.

That said, on Thursday I took some time to really sit down and figure out how to take the flat rack I had from a previous bike, and attach it to Lucky. Luckily enough, I realized the flat rack already had extenders on it. Woohoo! Mackenzie: 1 Bad Karma: 0. After some bending and tweaking I managed to get the flat rack put on, and it's pretty level too. Hurray!

Next I took the collapsible wire pannier style basket I bought and attached it to the flat rack. This wasn't too difficult. Though, in hindsight, it probably would have been easier to attach the flat rack and basket to one another before attaching them to the bike. Oh well. Live and learn.

Now, with all of those updates the only things I have left to purchase are:
1 - pair of Planet Bike Freddy Fenders
1 - new bracket to re-attach my six-pack rack
1 - and potentially another collapsible basket, for the other side
(this one can probably wait until spring)

The only issue I have with the basket is that when it's expanded, and I pedal, the heal of my foot hits the basket. This is assembly error on my part...oops. I think I'll just have to slide it back a bit, and that should take care of the issue. Too bad I didn't think of this before I went off on my jaunt to Girls' Night. My Achilles was fearing harm the whole ride. I was forced to place the pedal under the arch and heal of my foot, rather than the ball. Can we say awkward?

And the only other complaint I have about that evening is how paranoid I was to be biking home at 11:00 pm on a Thursday night from The North Loop/Warehouse District, up past the Quarry, and onto the top of the hill. I did take the opportunity to use the new Minneapolis Diagonal trail from Stinson and E Hennepin and up to New Brighton and Stinson by The Quarry. All of the people driving erratically downtown freaked me out a little. It being "Thirsty Thursday" and everything. I thought it best to take that bit of well lit off street path. It was lovely.

I should really update more often, rather than writing these ridiculously long posts...I'll learn soon enough.

CORN, corn, corn, corncorncorn, corncorn!

I have just returned from Nebraska, and I really liked it! Omaha seems like a decent city, and the rural out state areas were pretty much par for the course in the Midwest. It was a really fun and pleasant experience! Speaking of par for the course...Jon and I went golfing with his dad. His dad works at this particular golf course. I don't know who the architect for this course was, but if I ever meet them, they will receive a firm talking to! OK, not really. If you're a good golfer it's not THAT difficult I'm sure, but for me?

The course was the most difficult I've ever experienced. BIG HUGE SPIKED YUCCA INFESTED WEED BUNKERS EVERYWHERE! And my ball landed(well ball after ball, since I lost so many)in the sand traps. A lot. I haven't golfed 18 holes since high school playoffs. That was a LONG time ago. It was exhausting just being out in the sun that long. Yeah, wow, I'm getting old.

Overall though I had a really great time in Nebraska with Jon's family. We relaxed, played a lot of games, and rocked out on guitar hero! New favorite game, for sure. It's a good thing I'm not one to indulge in video gaming systems...something tells me I would rarely leave the house with guitar hero sitting there, calling my name.

Highlight of the weekend: Jon sporting some fake kiddie blue tooth earpieces with bright red twinkling lights, that were pulled out of a cereal box. His cute elderly grandmother says to him as she's walking out of the room "I always knew you'd sparkle!" Hilarious.

Today was my first full day of work since last Wednesday...it is so hard to come back from an extended weekend. Does anyone else hate Sunday nights (in this case it was a Monday, but you know what I mean) as much as I do? I dread having to go back to a full day of work the next day. I feel like it's always been this way, be it school or work, but I'm not certain if it's just me, or the jobs I've had in recent years...Hmmmm...interesting.

This morning I thought that maybe it would help my mood to bike to work. As sweaty as it was, it really did cheer me up. There's something about pedaling along down the street for 4 miles or so through the neighborhoods, and into downtown. Maybe it's that I have to sit so upright on this particular bike, but I feel like even purposeful rides/commuting rides are leisurely. It's quite nice. Now I just have to pedal back up that darn hill once I trek back to Northeast. I just realized that it will most likely be dark by the time I head home tonight. I'm not too excited about the quickly shortening days, but oh well. That's just part of fall. Good thing I remembered my bike lights! YEEHAW!

Stevie Wonder

"Isn't she lovely? And my bike's name is Lucky...not Stevie Wonder.

In exciting personal news, I'm going to Seattle! YAY! My friend Heidi is getting married out there in October, AND my friend Devon is moving back to Seattle just before my visit. I get to stay with Devon, then she and I will drive 2 hours north to the wedding location. Turns out this place is only an hour south of Vancouver...So after the wedding we'll go visit Mary! HURRAY! What a successful tour of the Pacific Northwest. Vancouver is said to have one of the best bicycling systems anywhere, so I'm pretty excited to check it out. :)

My aunt sent me this article from The New York Times. http://www.transalt.org/press/media/2006/559.html

The article is from September 2006, but the issues addressed still exist, and don't appear to be vastly improving anytime soon. Though, if I'm not mistaken I believe New York has made some progress in moving forward with implementing a congestion pricing model? Nonetheless, the article is still interesting, and makes the important point that there isn't just one solution (ahem, more lanes alone is not the answer. period.).

It's a matter of improving infrastructure, safety, environment, as well as education and enforcement efforts for all modes simultaneously, that will lead to improving congestion and a better quality of life. Yes, by enforcement I mean ticketing cars for moving violations regarding pedestrians (the line BEFORE the crosswalk is there for a reason) AND ticketing cyclists who run red-lights, and operate their bicycles in an unpredictable endangering manner. There are laws and rules, and I am of the opinion that nobody (cars, semis, trucks, buses, cyclists, pedestrians) is above them. Anywho, all of this stuff GREATLY interests me, but bores most to tears.

Rain, rain, go away

I WANT TO RIDE MY BIKE ALL DAY!

When did Minneapolis become Seattle, London, or *insert name of drizzly, grey foggy city here* <insert>? Now would be a good time for me to invest in some fenders for my bicycle, I suppose. Though that would require payment of some form, and presently I am, how do you say...Broke as Joke?

Before fenders, however, I need to repair Lucky's six-pack rack. I do believe I may have put too much weight on that little rack, causing excessive stress to the small lode bearing bracket, thus snapping it in two. Super. I can repair it, but just haven't had the time to pick up the JB Weld and have at 'er. Until I get that fixed I either do not ride, or ride while listening to the clanking and clattering of metal on metal with every tiny rock, bump, and hole I hit as I pedal along. No, not weed, bud, Mary Jane, grass, cannabis, or marijuana. Sorry to disappoint, but it's not nearly that exciting, or relaxed/absent minded, as it were... On a side note check out this map regarding the legality of cannabis. Interesting...

I am addicted to a dark haired, mischievous English bloke, with far-too-round-for-post-John-Lennon-era wire rimmed glasses, and a curiously shaped lighting bolt scar on his forehead.

That's right, I'm addicted to Harry Potter. Rather, I WAS addicted to Harry Potter.
Which is why I have:
A.) Not been riding my bicycle nearly as much as I should/would like to be!
Turns out it's pretty difficult to ride your bike and read a book at the same time. Well, at least I'm not that coordinated, but that's not saying a whole helluva lot either...
Needless to say, the bus provides me a much better situation to lose myself in a book for 20-30 minutes at a time.
B.) Neglected this blog for so very long. Poor Lucky the bike, locked up to my back porch post. *tear* Like anyone reads this anyway, right?

It all started on a lovely June day. My boyfriend, Jon (or manfriend? At what age does a boyfriend become a manfriend? I'm thinking maybe that's not until you hit 40, or maybe 50? I digress...) Anyway, Jon and I were talking about Harry Potter, as the fifth movie was soon to be released, and the seventh and final book shortly thereafter.

I mentioned I hadn't read any of the books, but had seen the first three films. The third being my favorite so far. This is, apparently, blasphemous. I also mentioned that I had yet to see the fourth film. This is when Jon laid the smack down. I was now given the task of reading books 1-4, before I would be allowed, yes, allowed to see the fourth film, and subsequently was not allowed to see the fifth film, until I had read that book as well. And so it goes...

I started in on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone the week of June 11th, and so it began. I ravenously pillaged through Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in just over a month. I've never been a book worm. Ever. These sucked me right in, and there was no turning back. I had now earned my right to see the fourth film. It wasn't my favorite. I was now one of THOSE people. You know "well the movie just didn't portray the book properly, the book is SOOO much better, that was awful they missed xyz key points of the story, etc." Yep, one of those. What had I become?!

I continued on through the books, I was now on the mission to read book 5, Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix, before anyone could spill the beans to me. SO GOOD! I finished up the book, and a week later Jon (the moyfriend?) and I had Harry Potter Movie Date Night. So much fun, and what a great movie! I loved it, very exciting.

I tore through the sixth book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and then finally to the seventh and final book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Sweet, sweet victory! I had made it to the seventh book unscathed, and still in complete darkness as to the goings on of the book. I managed to read the entire Harry Potter series in just over two months. That's a pretty big deal for me, but now I'm sad. What am I supposed to do with my free time if not reading Harry Potter? I blame you, J.K. Rowling! Luring all of us unsuspecting fans, only to quash our dreams forever. You can end the series, but you can't take my imagination or my memories! I also blame Jon, but mostly thank him :), for managing to get me excited about books again. Yay reading!

OK, so I'm mostly kidding about the addiction. Thank you J.K. Rowling for a lovely two months of non-stop Harry Potter. Life will go on, if not a little more productively, now unable to feed that addiction.

Back into Kurt Vonnegut's arms, I run. So it goes.

Mackenzie

(And a heartfelt "Well done!" to anyone that bothered wading through that lengthy bit of blathering...)

Lollygagging

I'm still in love with my bike. Hurray, and big surprise, eh? Still don't have a picture with Lucky to post, but soon enough, soon enough. (Right, who am I kidding, I'm the biggest procrastinating putter-offer I know...)

I've been conciously putting more miles on the bike lately. I signed up for the Lazyman's Triathalon, a 5 week promotion through the YMCA. It's called the Lazyman's Triathalon because the goal is to complete a full Ironman's Triathalon in those 5 weeks. Their mantra is Swim. Run. Bike. Rest. It's pretty cute, if I do say so myself. This whole ordeal kicked off on July 1st. True to my usual style, I'll probably end up packing most of the distance in the last two weeks. Oh, well, at least I'm aware of how I operate, right? So here I go, determined to Swim 2.5 miles, Run 26.2 miles, and Bike 112 miles all in a 5 weeks. I will do this. There are people who do this in a 24 hour period. I can certainly polish it off in 5 weeks. Fingers crossed that I don't slack-off too much. :)

Distances completed as of Thursday, July 12, 2007:
Swim: 0 miles
Run: 10.6 miles
Bike: 24.77 miles

Not too shabby, all things considered!

Wish List, Ball Game, and Bus-tration

I've been riding around A LOT in the last couple of weeks. Riding to work, running errands, for fun, and to get to fun summer events, and where I need to go generally. In doing all of these things there are a few pieces of bicycle gear that I believe would be helpful:

1. Fenders
- I've already checked these out. Planet bike has a nice set to fit 700CCs that would suit the bike pretty well. They only cost around $20 for the pair.

2. Flat rack
- I need one of these, in black as well (have to coordinated with the six-pack rack on front, duh). This will allow me to attach...

3. Grocery bag baskets/panniers
- These will be black as well. :) I hope. This would make running errands and transporting groceries MUCH easier than it was the other day...Just lucky I didn't tip over and break everything open that I was trying to get home. Not too smart.

4. Bicycle Odometer
- Also known as a bicycle computer. Really I don't need anything as fancy as a bicycle computer, but I would like something that tells me how far I'm riding.

Last week Jon and I thought it would be fun to hit up a St. Paul Saints game. We decided to bike there. We rode along the U of M transit way for most of our trip, then jumped onto Energy Park Drive over to Midway Stadium. The transit way was nice and quiet, just us and our bikes. Energy Park Drive was busy busy busy, but we managed to stay over on the right shoulder and the conditions were smooth, and not debris filled. It was lovely.

Now, onto the frustration. I no longer have a car. This is not the part that frustrates me. I have an Metropass fully subsidized by work, this allows me to get where I need to go, when I am unable to bike there. Metro Transit has bike racks on the front of their buses. I've used them many, many times before. They are wonderful. I just have one problem, and haven't yet decided if I should blame my bike or the bus bike racks. MY BIKE DOES NOT FIT IN THE RACK! Sad. :(

There are ways around this, and it's not the end of the world, but I was pretty bummed out, just the same. The wheels on my bike are 29ers, with 700cc tires. Apparently this combined with the length of my frame has resulted in a bicycle that's a little too long for the wheels to properly set in the bus bike racks. Looks like I'll be parking and locking it up, when I need to take the bus. Maybe Metro Transit's next line of bus bike racks will be large enough to accommodate my mutant bike...though I won't hold my breath.

I will still ride the bus, and I still love my bike to death. That's all for now. Down to the BP I go for the holiday, with my bike in tow! WHEEE!

My First Ride

The first trip I took was from the Lake Harriet bandshell to the Midtown Exchange at Chicago and Lake in south Minneapolis. I wasn't sure which route to take, but decided upon the parkway trail that was headed north. My instincts were telling me that I would hit Lake Calhoun eventually, and sure enough, I did. From there I traveled along the parkway lane that moves around Calhoun up to 36th.

36th is a busy street. Wow. It does hook up with 35W, so the traffic volume is understandable, but it's a lot different on a bicycle. For whatever reason, I had a feeling (hoped for my sweet little life) that most people would notice a girl on a bike in a BRIGHT red shirtdress. Anecdotally, it's been found that drivers often slow and give enough space to bicyclist whom wear their helmets, and even moreso, females. I don't write the rules of behavior, but that observation suits me just fine. Thank you. I rode along 36th from Lake Calhoun, east to Park Avenue, north to Lake St, and east to Chicago Ave.

Total mileage of my first spin out with Lucky: 3.57 miles
Traffic: Moderate
Mood: FREAKING EXCITED!

Gettin' Lucky with BikeTown!

Long story short. I wrote an essay of 50 words or less about how a new bike would set me free. This essay contest was open to residents of Minneapolis. Over 300 essays were submitted, with the 50 best essays, as determined by editors of Bicycling Magazine, selected as the winners for 50 bikes to be given away on Saturday, June 16th.

I came in 51st. Yep, that's right, just missed the cut-off. However, I was notified that I was at the top of the alternates list. (whew) That meant that I would be notified on Thursday, June 14th, after 7 pm as to whether or not there was a bike for me. I got the call. Two days later, I headed down to the Lake Harriet bandshell to the BikeTown giveaway event, where I picked up my brand new, shiny, mint green, Raleigh Coasting! Which I immediately so aptly named "Lucky".
